Lacan's Diagram of Desire
Lacan: Transference is a closing up of the unconscious. The identification that the analyzand is trying to forge inadvertently or otherwise with the analyst is a symbolic identification where they can be the placeholder for an ego ideal. And ideally, this would lead to and allow for a kind of narcissistic love of oneself by and in terms of some other person. This would be the point at which on 270, the subject can finally see him or herself as lovable but only from the optics of an identification with some other omniscient being.
