Alaska Statehood
The alaska state hood act transferred 103 million acres of the federally owned alaska territory to the new state. It also included a clause ceding other lands to the native people who had historically inhabited them and still claimed them. Many conservationists wanted the land preserved as a place of study, carefully balanced ego systems they felt mustn't be fiddled with. But when oil was discovered in 19 68, commercial and industrial interests swarmed the state. Environmentalists were adamantly opposed to a pipe line that would melt perma frost and disrupt migration patterns.
