Is Outlining Really Important When Writing a Series?

I find I've been kicking something around for a year that's in development that has, you know, mass around it. By the time a word reaches our lips, it's dead. So many writers get confused about how outlines are supposed to work. It needs to be that simple for you. Otherwise your piece is going to feel diffuse.
