The Buddha taught in the Anapana-sati, the mindfulness of breathing. It's just to use breathing in a way that relaxes the body. So most of the time that means full inhalations and very long exhales where the exhale is much longer than the inhalation. One way to do this is to keep slowly releasing air even long after it feels like you've run out of air to release.
