Between 20 and 40,000 ethnic Germans were killed as a direct result of their treatment in Soviet occupied Czechoslovakia. Some three million were expelled from their homes in Austria, Germany, or taken back to slave labor camps in the Soviet Union. Ukraine for example was the stage of massive battles between the Russian Empire and the Central Powers during the First World War. Nearly 5 million men from the Ukrainian provinces called up and driven into those trenches.
