The Aspiration of Continental Expansion
The idea of westward expansion was clearly in their minds and in their practices. And that was going to happen whether they were unified into a single country or not. They just couldn't have aspired, realistically, in the 17 eighties, to actually conquering the whole continent. But once napoleon had sold a right of expansion, it was possible to imagine that kind of broad continental expansion happening.
