The ancients have a very sharp notion of inequality. They think that some people are definitely better than others, or higher status than others. And so for Plato, we end up needing this hierarchy because we want to live lives that we can't live without the help of other people. The only way you could have time to do those things with ancient technology, in particular, is by making other people serve you.
