Researchers have found and identified bacteria that could help break down some of the forever chemicals accumulating around the world. The researchers obtained microb-rich sludge from a local sewage treatment plant and exposed it to a variety of chlorine-bearing PFAS molecules. They found that after the bacteria first removed the chlorine, they could then remove almost 80% of the fluorine atoms. Now scientists have used clever chemistry to identify the precise combination of ingredients needed to ensure that gummies keep their chew.
