Melville was famous for his early books with their wild adventures at sea Hawthorne was an anonymous admirer of them. He didn't get married in a church because he and his bride were worried that the crowds might be disruptive so they were instead married in a private home. His new wife was Lizzie Shaw the daughter of one of Melville's father's friends who was also the chief justice of Massachusetts Lameul Shaw had been kind to the Melville's and offered some financial support. Their courtship was a whirlwind affair just three months after they met they got marriedthey took a honeymoon to Canada and Montreal and settled down in a house on fourth avenue in New York City
