History on Fire

CHAPTER

The Story of Jiguro Kano

In 1877 samurai traditionalists rebelled against the new government in one became known as the satsuma rebellion and they were crushed by government forces. The general perception was that traditional fighting arts, even unarmed forms of combat such as jujitsu were no longer useful in modern life. So it was really bad timing for jiguro kano since that's exactly around the time when he was trying to learn anything he could about jujitsu. He wasn't interested in war, he was primarily interested in not getting bullied in school.
