Is Democracy a Sustainable Future?

I think the more hard-pressed people get as the population of the earth grows, then I think it's going to result in a large number of people almost voluntarily opting out of democracy. And ironically you can see a parallel of extreme nature a thousand years ago when one of the major reasons why people were enslaved was because they've sold their children into slavery. So I do not see the sustainable future as being one which is harmonious and democratic, though I would really like to believe that. If anybody can show me I'm wrong, I'd be very wrong.
