If you were a mediaeval christian or an archaic religious thinker, of any sort, your first presupposition was that the world and the cosmos existed exactly as they appeared. For him, the earth was eternally fixed and at rest in the centere of the universe, encircled by the course of a sun that solicitously bestowed its warmth. Despite the fact that empirical people had to deal with death and disease on a scale that i think is completely unknown to us, it doesn't seem unreasonable to presuppose that there was a certain degree of comfort to be found in a world view of this sort,. right?
