Modernization of Japan
Masafumi Mandan: Emperor Meiji launched a so-called modernization campaign. The emperor himself ditched traditional robes and started to wear European-style military uniforms. He also cut his hair European short from a samurai top knot. In 1885, Tokyo's Imperial University put students in a uniform that made them look like little fancy Prussian soldiers.
