The Age of Lighthouses
The first known lighthouse was the pharaoh of Alexandria in Egypt, built over 2,000 years ago. Experts say that the age of modern Lighthouses began in the 18th century. The Tower of Hercules in northwest Spain is one such lighthouse. It was built by the Romans during the 1st or 2nd century. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
