The Role of Fluorescent Pigments in Life Cell Microscopy

Shallow water corals use these fluorescent pigments as sunscreens for their symbiotic algae. One of the research applications we found is the use of these pigments as imaging tools in life cell microscopy. So obviously it's a bit more complicated than I tell you now but what one can do is to first screen for the messenger RNA which encodes these proteins. And then you can just pick out a colony which shows the relevant coloration of the fluorescence and then you can extract the gene of interest from there.
