The kidneys are extremely good at getting rid of excess bicarbonate. In one study, normal subjects were given about 1000 mil equivalents of sodium bicarbonates for two weeks. If it's not just the contraction that's maintaining this metabolic alkalosis, it must be something else. And so we have to find out what that something else is.
