How to Diagnose Angle Closure Glaucoma in Primary Care
Angle closure glaucoma is when the aqueous outflow through the trabecular mesh work becomes blocked by the iris. Risk factors include Asian ethnicity and being an Alaska native. Hyperopia or farsightedness can increase risk as well as some medications such as anticholinergics, adrenergics, and anti-depressants. Physical exam will show reduced visual acuity, conjunctival injection surrounding the iris, a hazy cornea,. Confirmation can be made using tonometry to detect that elevated intraocular pressure.
