The Speakership in 1856

In 1856, there were other contested speakerships over slavery around that time in 1849 and 1859. Henry Clay was one of the founding members of the wig party, this party that arises in opposition to Andrew Jackson's presidency. The wig party never had a clear internal sort of ideology; it really falls apart in the 1850s over this issue of slavery. In these 133 ballots before the No Nothing that Nathaniel Banks has finally elected speaker.
