The Rise and Fall of Taiwan

The interregnum between 1951 and 1971 did for Taiwan. It ensured that the PRC was not going to make the final push across the Taiwan Strait. But it also created an opportunity for Taiwan to be developed economically using the same development approach that Japan had used. By the time the US finally begins to realize we need to find a way to recognize the PRC, Taiwan has become a highly developed, export-oriented economy with a very prosperous and almost entirely middle-class society.
