Sertorius and the War of the Plebs

Sertorius fought marius style, not surveying the battle formations from up on some hill, but right there on the front lines with his men. He had to recruit a whole legion of troops in northern italy when he was quiestor. And after the war, because he had held the requisite offices and had a brilliant military record, he was enrolled as a member of the senate. Because of all this, certorius became extremely popular in rome. They would give him standing novations. This is the sort of treatment tha it wasn't easy to get,. even if he were a former consul who would triumphed over barbarians.
