Banks are not set up to be in the land-blording business. What they're trying to do is lend, then take that collateral if those loans go bad and then recycle that collateral into more cash. And as we saw with Silicon Valley Bank, that one single node going into distress can cause contagion across a much wider subset of the financial system.
The pressure on commercial real estate borrowers is amping up, but so is insider buying at the regional banks lending them money.
