Wessex had a history of splitting leadership between multiple heirs. Edward was the younger heir, and he was also less senior on the line of succession. So would he be serving as subking to Atherwald? That would hardly be a good solution for the Alfredian line. The ruling couple of Mercia had quite a lot of power of their own.
