Reggae: The Origin Story
The struggle against oppression is the origin story of virtually every folk music on the planet. The Indian cold drink, known as Tandi, gave Jamaicans their first taste of Ganga. In Spain, castanets were added as flamenco was shuffled into cafes to become flashier and less reliant on the jitano. This has been true of every black form of music in America, from soul-rending cry to capitalist derivative. And it's also true of any genre of foreign music that gains mainstream attention in America - including reggae.
