The Secret Service and the White House Bunker
Deputy White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolton was the highest ranking member of the president's staff present that day. He went to Cheney's office after the second tower was struck. The Secret Service told him that a hijacked plane was just miles away and flying low. That secure bunker underneath the east wing had never been used before for an emergency. We could hear fighter jets overhead as we the senior staff and senior leaders were evacuated into the bunker.
