People as far back as in ancient Rome traded in shares. The citizens of ancient Rome would buy shares in these companies called the publican societies that were large organizations that would do the activities of the government for them. For example, a publican society might be given a contract to collect the debts from a province like an Asia miner. In return, they'd be able to profit from this and another one might get a contract to maintain the religious buildings in the forum in Rome.
