Anglo-Saxons and William I had basically no problem with the whole thing. But when Thea both died in 1161 Henry saw this as an opportunity. He thought why not get his own man in places Archbishop? And then they can work together to sort this thing out. So Thomas was made a priest on the 2nd of June and became Archbishop, consecrated by our old mate Henry of Boir Bishop of Winchester. On the face of it nothing changed. In October 1163 Henry held court at Westminster where he tried to get it clear that churchmen should be subject to his secular courts. Critics are surely surely overzealous lay lords who would have applied one standard of justice
