UNLOCKED: Myth of the Month 12, Finale: The Historical King Arthur
Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
Is There a King Arthur?
There is no arthur shaped whole in the histo of the dark age. Even that earliest little snip at reference in egodaden is from after arthur would have already lived and died, probably a generation or two later. And even beyond that, we do not have any original manuscripts from the dark age of this poem. All we have are manuscript copies that were produced several hundred years later. So for all these reasons, we might still say that the existence of a historical arthur is plausible, but it is not required, at least not in this particular way.
