In 1920, an already established pig farm was forced to close because the New York City Supreme Court passed new zoning laws that such a stinky business could not exist within a thousand feet of a personal residence or highway. As pigs were taken from the hands of family farms and moved into factory farms, the conditions they were made to live in worsened significantly. Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle called pigs the animals most like people. It's easy to imagine that we could harbor some subconscious guilt for the way these hidden creatures suffer, so turning them monstrous can help assuage that guilt.
