The History of Black Dolls
In the early 1900s, a formerly enslaved man named Richard Henry Boyd decided to start a doll company that would make black dolls. His company is believed to be the first black doll company in the US. They were different from the black dolls that had been made by white owned companies. Those dolls were often modeled on racist caricatures and as one researcher wrote quote 19th century doll manufacturers invited enactments of racial violence when they made black dolls.
