The Fed knows damn well that raising unemployment right now will not really do much about inflation, but it will discipline. What caused massive inflation was basically the entire economy right after coven, having asset inflation and then people just starting to try to rent. I don't actually see evidence that in a fiat currency society demand really ever plays that much.
