Newcomen's Steam Engine

Thomas Newcomen invented the first modern steam engine in 1664. His machine used a giant horizontal beam and vacuum to pump water out of mine shafts. He also added an injection valve, plug rod and y-shaped lever for on-off switch. Three-fourths of all profits would go to Savry's family; only one-fourth went to Newcomen.
