The Collision Resistance of Hash Functions

Hash functions are used as a secure checksum algorithm. And they're also used in digital signatures, because digital signatures typically really signing the checksum and not the message itself. There's a type of attack on hash functions, which is surprising called the birthday collision. The trick is to sort of preserve the number of states it can be in as you're doing the munging.
