The History of the Lazaretto
Lazaretto is an Italian term that referred to either an isolation hospital for patients with contagious diseases or a facility for quarantining ships or other vessels. The name comes from the biblical figure Lazarus, a beggar covered with sores who became the patron saint of lepers. In the 15th century plague was a recurring threat in particularly in busy Mediterranean commercial seaports like Venice.
