Husbands, Love Your Wives

In ephesians, Paul addresses the subordinate party first. This was in stark contrast to other ancient writings which addressed only the top of the social order. The superior, by ancient definition, was called to submission by paul not only the inferior. Nothing in respect of literature to this point in history called a husband to submit himself to his wife or a father to his child. Parents are then called to avoid exasperating their kids, but to raise them up in the training and instruction of the lord. Richard foster says, submission is the spiritual discipline that frees us from the everlasting burden of always needing to get our own way.
