The Debate on Garden Cities
In the original Garden City, it was before we had a planning system. People were involved in all of those enterprise and there was a whole flourishing of art and community groups which emerged from some of those original Garden Cities. The Post-war Newtowns Act is still on the statute books. It was last consolidated in 1981, but with a few amendments accompanied by a strategic policy enabling local authorities to work,. that could happen tomorrow if there was political will to do so. Lechworth has something called the Garden City Foundation which reinvests lots of its income in upkeep of Lechworth Garden City.
