There's a sympathy one has for certain elites that if you're outside of the elite, it's just nuts. Can you imagine being the child of a parent who fakes your way into college but doesn't tell you that they're doing it? Most of those kids got in not by cheating, but because the rules of meritocracy when applied precisely as designed favor people whose parents can invest enormous amounts in training them. If you want to unwind inequality and stop the exclusion that we're suffering, there's a way in which focusing on those who cheat actually bolsters the moral bona fides of the system.
