The Importance of Self-Stimulation
Sally Kohn: I can hear my son stimming even when we are late for his meds. She says the self-stimulatory behaviors all come under the heading of automatic reinforced behavior. The reinforcer is not candy that they're getting, it's not laughing or smiling, she says. Kohn: We never want to take away a coping mechanism without putting something in its place that works as good or better.
