The plants didn't do so well on ships, floating in the ocean for weeks at a time, and they would just die on the way. So european gardeners needed to build indoor spaces that would approximate the climates of india, australia and the caribbean. Botanical gardens also provided an opportunity for europeans to see what the natural world might have looked like in the colonies. And growing these tropical plants in europe was a demonstration of conquest and control.
