Exploding New Methods to Produce Supercritical Water
Supercritical water can carry 10 times as much heat energy to the surface as regular water or steam. 374 degrees Celsius is the minimum threshold temperature for producing supercritical water. It's impossible to drill through 400 degrees Celsius rock using a normal drill bit that uses friction to grind through rock. Almost any drilling equipment anyone has ever invented would literally melt at those temperatures. There are already a couple of experimental approaches to solving this problem.
