Looping is a deep listening technique that I've learned from conflict mediators and now I use it all of the time. It's a really useful way to prove to the other person that you're trying to get them. First you distill what they're telling you into the most elegant language you can muster then check to see if you got it right. There's a bunch of reasons for doing this all of them backed up by their research but the bottom line is people need to feel heard before they will listen.
