Jerome and the Septuagent
Jerome never divulges the source of his doubts about the sept myth. i am inclined to agree with naomi sidman's suggestion that jerome, knowledgeable of contemporary rabinic opinion, agreed with their assessment of the septuagents inaccuracy. Jerome works backwards to diffuse that authority by denying the translator's gift of prophecy. Since ptolemy was worshipper of one god, might not yet cover a double divinity with the hebrews. It is not unreasonable to assume that he borrowed their view and adapted it to his christian purpose.
