Is there enough political desire to have an oversight of what people do after they leave government? I don't know if the good chaps thing was ever real, but it does always feel slightly golden agey. It's difficult to see how you wouldn't want a committee of MPs deciding what jobs MPs got afterwards - that creates all kinds of conflicts of interest. So, and generally, the reason that so many bodies have kind of mushroomed over the past few decades is because in a whole range of fields, politicians seem to be reluctant to actually exercise day to day power over vast amounts of stuff.
