History of the World podcast

CHAPTER

The Adena Hope World Tradition

The hope world tradition can be separated into geographical areas. The peak of the adena culture is looked upon historically as the hope world tradition. Mounds from this period spanning the first millennium BCE through to the middle of the first millennium CE show a much more considered construction. Smoking pipes were commonplace in hope world graves and they were also present in adena graves of an earlier period. We see evidence of the use of hallucinogenics in the ancient cultures of South America but it is thought to have been used here for spiritual ceremonies too.
