When kag was 19, he set off on a 31-mile hike to find shelter above the tree line. He burned his left ear so badly that it still looks basically like a large number of blood vessels have broken there. Kag says many people who grow up feeling like in order to be loved they have to prove something act this way. His older brother home henry david thoreu's walden which chronicled the philosophers two years in change and now lives five minutes from walden.
