The Power of Simple Programs in Science
Rule 30 is one of these cellular automata the 30 just you take the binary decomposition of 30 it's one one one zero that specifies the rule. The program started off with one black cell get this whole pattern there's some regularity in it but if you look at kind of just the center column of cells it's a bit like the digits of pi so far as we can tell. Once you've generated it it looks completely random even though we know it's produced from this from this very simple rule discovering rule 30 was kind of this opened this door into realizing when we look at nature for example and we see all this complexity in nature this is the trick it's using.
