Mary Robinson won the vote on the second round, having trailed Brian Lanahan. The head of state was a woman. A woman's place was in public office. And I remember even when my mum talked about it, I never thought she'd see that in her lifetime. It was an expression of the rage that had built up over decades. Once it became clear that the Irish establishment would not always hold sway, it just opened up this possibility of much more change to come.
