Hague's influence was awful. British officers under him were expected to attack and show quote offensive spirit, even against the most invincible defensive fire. Officers had to implement Hague's vague instructions or be replaced and disgraced. He gave his subordinates the singular gift of the authoritarian defined by Dixon as a terrible crippling obedience.
