The idea that you were actually supposed to be in love with and emotionally fulfilled by your spouse starts with this idea of companion marriage in the late 18th century. But I think the problem is we've sort of taken that ideal, both then and now, to say, all of your emotional fulfillment should come from this spouse. And that's not really possible for one person to do.
