Sanam Vakhil: Khamenei has been in failing health for a long time. She says it speaks to the broader uncertainty about the coming political transition once he passes. The Islamic Republic has never failed to use brute force to repress Iranians, she says. Many activists and potential leaders are in jail or in the diaspora; that leaves this movement leaderless.

The 22-year-old Iranian died in police custody after being arrested for wearing her hijab improperly. Her death has sparked a protest movement calling for the end of a regime that has for decades ruled Iran with an iron fist.
