In the second century, Christian started reinterpreting a verse in Isaiah. It's a rebuke of Israel where God basically says, even animals are smart enough to recognize who their master is and you're stupider than animals. And so they started putting this ox and the donkey in the manger scenes as a way of saying, even the animals recognize the coming of their master.
